Charles Sun is one of the main characters in the Netflix streaming series The Brothers Sun. He is the legendary killer and top Jade Dragons member who travels to Los Angeles to protect his mother and brother after his father is seemingly put in a coma. Charles is portrayed by actor Justin Chien as an adult and Isaac Wong as a teenage Charles.

History[]

In Pilot, three armed assassins stroll into a hotel room, only to face a brutal takedown by Charles in Taipei. Just hardly in the nick of time, Charles kills every one of them, but his cake was burned in the oven and he tosses it in the trash. Later, Blood Boots, a bald man, and his crew are summoned to clear the bodies and erase any traces from the blood-stained carpet. Afterwards, a sniper shoots Big Sun in the stomach through the window of a building across the street. Charles’ father is rushed to the hospital. However, due to a lack of blood flowing to the brain, he slips into a coma. According to the doctors, there’s little chance that he will ever wake up. Before losing consciousness, Charles’ father orders him to go to Los Angeles, find his mother and brother, and protect them from any harm that may befall them.

Arriving in LA, Charles reaches his mother’s house, unaware that a henchman is waiting to assassinate him. Without breaking a sweat, Charles defeats the assailant, and pins him to the table with two knives to stab both of his hands on a table and the floor. Casually, Charles offers him a cigarette, and presses him for information about his boss. However, when the henchman refuses to snitch, and he attempts to release himself by moving his hands out of the knives, Charles then breaks his neck in a single strike to end his life. Eventually, Mama Sun returns home, discovers the dead body, and playfully vents her frustration on Charles by breaking things. Charles then tells her that his father is in a coma, and it’s likely Sleepy Chan, Father’s long-time rival, who sent the sniper. The two older men have been locked in a triad power struggle for two decades. Later, Charles confronts his brother, Bruce, in a night club, who has been selling May Song’s drugs all night. However, Charles’ attempt to introduce himself to his brother leads to being tasered by May’s men. Learning that Bruce and Charles are both the sons of one of Taiwan’s biggest gangsters, May and his men attack Charles. They believe Charles is in LA to take over their business. In the end, Charles easily defeats all of May’s men, including May herself. Just when the brothers think they’re in the clear, an explosion tears through the room, breaking down the walls and allowing a group of armed gunmen to storm in. The armed goons fill May with lead along with her crew, but fortunately, Charles and Bruce manage to escape relatively unharmed.

In Favor for a Favor, rather than taking Bruce to college, Charles asks him to deliver a large suitcase containing the body parts to a bald man who handles such matters. The bald man states that the condition for the body to be disposed of is to drop off a water monitor to someone in Arcadia. Charles has no intention of becoming a delivery guy, but flips the script when he learns that the man they’re supposed to meet might, know the identity of the attacker, who attacked him in his mother’s home. Unbeknownst to Charles, the bald man is a backstabber and leaks Charles’ location to a mystery caller. On the way to their destination, Charles eventually reveals to Bruce that their father is a feared member of the Jade Dragon Society, a triad with roots dating back to the Qing Dynasty. He explains to his naive brother that the Triad is systematized into different factions, each ruled by gangsters who deal with all sorts of illegal activities and crimes. Charles continues on by stating that right now they’re in the crosshairs of a triad player who goes by the moniker "Sunny Chan".

Later, Charles arrives at the mansion in Arcadia, and surprisingly, the owner remembers Charles from a past meeting, where Charles killed a man with a pool cue. When Charles shows the killer’s head, the owner clams up and demands assurance that the Jade Dragons will protect him. Charles agrees, but before any valuable information is shared, the man is stabbed by a gang of goons decked out in dinosaur costumes. Thanks to Charles’ martial arts skills, the brothers once again manage to escape unharmed. However, the dinosaur-clad attackers are the least of their worries, as the cops, including Mark Rizal and Alexis Kong, a Deputy DA, are also hot on their trail, investigating May’s death and the explosion at the nightclub.

Eventually, Alexis does track Bruce down to his college and finds Charles munching on churros, casually holding a bag containing the killer’s head. It also turns out that Charles and Alexis both share a history as old friends who grew up together in Taipei as children. Their paths split when Alexis went to America for education from a few years back. However, before Alexis can question Charles further, he once again slips away. Later, Alexis pays another visit to Charles, reveals that she knows about his father’s condition, and warns him against stirring up trouble in Los Angeles.

In Whatever You Want, Charles is on a call with Yuan, his father’s assistant, who is giving him an update about his father. Subsequently, Charles asks him to find a way to get a face-to-face meeting with Sleepy Chan. Charles and Alexis both meet for lunch, and they can’t seem to meet halfway with anything, as Charles does not want to be associated with cops, and she is insistent that she isn’t one. Eileen calls Charles and informs him about Bruce’s kidnapping. The duo visits the school, and Grace Hwang fills them in about June Song. Much to Charles' chagrin, Eileen and her eldest son both play mahjong, but Charles thinks it’s a waste of time. During the game, Eileen manages to get some intel. The information leads them to Tony Tang, who owns the #1 seafood restaurant in Alhambra. He also sells drugs to the White Crane Gang. Later, Charles beats the drivers who work for Tony Tang outside, whereas Eileen enters the restaurant to deal with him face-to-face. She directly asks him about the drugs, and he refuses to know anything of that sort. Charles finds out the location of the warehouse Bruce was in. At that location, June and Charles both prepare for a fight against each other. Bruce stops them and tells June the truth about May’s death. Charles takes June, Bruce, and TK Lee to the new hideout. Afterwards, June also informs Charles that a rather tall man had visited her for a tattoo, and got a phrase that says “Riddance of evil must be thorough”. Charles and Eileen both agree that the spectacle that June will create by killing Tony Tang will force Sleepy Chan to reveal himself and arrive to LA. Charles, later on, asks Alexis to visit Tony Tang’s restaurant as she will get a big scoop.

In Square, Charles reunites with Xing and Blood Boots, who have come to LA as Sleepy Chan had sent a sign that he agreed to meet with Charles. Later, when they are all having dinner, Charles states that Bruce should be a part of the discussion, but Eileen doesn't agree. When Charles and the rest of the group arrive, Drowsy Chan is waiting for them. Drowsy Chan tells Charles that he agrees to all the conditions, except one. Charles returns home with the bad news that Eileen could not come to the meeting as Sleepy Chan did not think it was right. Bruce decides to join and help his brother out, and Charles is thrilled to see him and promises him that he will not let him die. Xing, Blood Boots, Charles, and Bruce all walk in, but Bruce is taken away silently. Drowsy Chan lets Charles inside a room, and gives him a phone. On the other end, it’s Bruce in front of Sleepy Chan. Later, fighting ensues, but Drowsy Chan informs Charles that those aren't his men. Therefore, Charles and Drowsy both agree to join forces and fight these mysterious men. They keep one alive, but he shows something in his hand, and the room blows up. Charles barely makes it out alive and sees police car lights.

In The Rolodex, Charles finds himself in a bed, waking up to a loud noise. Disoriented, he doesn’t know where he is. It turns out that her old childhood friend Alexis saved him, and though Charles is uncomfortable talking to a cop, he’s grateful and asks her to retrieve his phone from a spa. Eventually, Alexis retrieves Charles’s phone, and they talk about their past before sleeping together. Charles asks for another favor, and they discuss the recent deaths of businessmen around town. Suspecting Alexis is using him, Charles refuses to share information. A fight ensues, revealing Alexis had put a tracker on his phone. When Charles arrives home, he and the others catch up on the events.

In Country Boy, Charles and Bruce both hide in a famous person’s house. They get there and find Xing and June Song. Unbeknownst to him, Alexis had sent two people to keep an eye on Charles. Charles and Bruce make the most of this crazy situation by trying to bond and make up for lost time. They play games and get to talking. Everyone watches as Charles bakes and appreciates his talent. Charles permits Grace Hwang to visit them in the hideout. They all have a great time, and Charles eventually reveals how he got his nickname, "Chairleg Sun". It turns out that when Charles was 14, his family was in danger as someone was trying to kill them at a restaurant. His father had asked Charles to protect the family, and Charles had murdered the man. Later, Charles gets a text that TK was found. Bruce asks him to promise him to use his words and not use violence while getting TK back. Charles makes this promise. In a shocking turn of events, the men Alexis had sent were murdered, and a red ribbon was kept in front of their bodies. Charles visits the location and calls Alexis. He tries to smooth things out, but Alexis is cold to him as her colleagues are listening to the conversation. Her coldness triggers Charles, and he goes on a violent spree. In the end, when one man asks him to spare his life, he is met with the memories of his first murder, and he lets the man go. He saves TK and leaves.

In Gymkata, with his mother now back in LA, Charles supports Eileen when she voices her interest in being the next Dragon head in charge of all the Triads. Eileen and Charles are planning the meeting, but are interrupted by Charles’s friends visiting from Taiwan. Unbeknownst to Charles, Alexis gets information about the Triad heads meeting in LA, as she is tracking Charles’ movements. Big Sun confronts his wife and tells her that she will not be running for the Dragon Head, but that it should be Charles. Charles does not want to do it. However, he will not disobey his father. Bruce tries to talk to Eileen and Charles, who don’t give into his requests. On the day of the meeting, Charles has prepared as much as he can for the occasion. Unfortunately, Eileen and Bruce are both not allowed to be at the meeting. With the FBI tracking Charles’s movements, as well as Alexis’s understanding of the Chinese belief system, this helps them keep track of the Triads. Big Sun nominates Charles to be the Dragon Head, but is interrupted when Eileen shows up. When a bomb which one of the Boxers throws blows up in front of the FBI, chaos ensues. Charles gets an opportunity to bring the Chairleg Sun out, and eventually, he and his father both manage to escape. As Big Sun is feeling humiliated and betrayed, he vows to punish Eileen. Charles refuses to kill his mother. Big Sun does not want her to die, but suffer every minute of her life. He asks Charles to kill Bruce, which shocks him to the core.

In Protect the Family, Charles finds Bruce and attacks him, but he is unable to pull the trigger. Eileen is further able to stop Charles, and he tells her that Big Sun has sent him to kill Bruce, but that he is unable to do it. Unfortunately, this means that Charles also won’t be able to go back without killing Bruce. Bruce tries to convince Charles to stand up to Big Sun for once in his life. Eileen and Charles think it won’t be easy. Bruce asks Charles to kill Big Sun, but Charles is furious at the suggestion. Having grown up with his father’s ideologies, killing his father is difficult for Charles. Charles, however, does take part of Bruce’s advice to heart and confronts Big Sun. His father tells him that America has made him weak, and that it was a good thing he had sent his mother and brother away. He also informs him that he had Xing follow him, in case he failed to do the job. Big Sun asks Xing and the Wang Brothers to finish the job. Charles is furious and kills his friends. He follows Xing out and shoots, but she drives off. Before he can follow suit, there are cops in the area who hear the gunshot and arrest Charles. At the police station, Charles begs Alexis to let him go, but she does not comply. She wants to know where Big Sun is, but Charles refuses to answer that. Alexis finds Bruce’s number, and calls him to the police station. Bruce puts up a performance to win Alexis’s sympathy, and get a private meeting with Charles without any security cameras on. Bruce then tells Charles that he will kill Big Sun, and this is the only way to protect the family. Thus, Charles gives Bruce the location. Alexis lets Charles go unscathed. Bruce, Charles, Eileen, June, and TK all have a great time together as a family. Later, when the dust settles, Charles perfects a churro recipe at his bakery store called "Little Fatty", and gives it to Bruce as a going-away present at the airport highway, since he is leaving with Eileen and June to Taiwan to protect their mother.
